A Home For Me

Welcome to the People First of Canada Housing Blog – A Home for Me!

The history of the People First movement in Canada is based on housing. The first right that members in Canada demanded was the right to live in the community and not in an institution. Today, housing is still a main priority for People First of Canada.

Across Canada, People First members have different housing experiences. This blog is a space for members to share their housing stories. It is a space for members to highlight the challenges and successes they have had along the way. It is a space for members to share their hopes for future housing or their happiness with their current home.

John and Donna Cox share their housing story

John and Donna Cox are long time members of People First Nova Scotia. John has a long history of being an advocate and activist for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Nova Scotia and nationally through his work with People First of Canada and other national disability groups.

Donna and John tell their origin story and their housing experiences in this video. (You can feel the love between these two!) Donna says, “Home for me means comfort, it means family, it means friends, it means neighbours, it means hope, it means love. That’s what home is to me.”

John and Donna share their story through the video below. The video is in English with French subtitles.

Michael Madden shares his housing story

Michael Madden is a member of People First of Ontario. Michael lives in Toronto. Michael speaks about the pros and cons of living alone. He also speaks about his hopes for future housing. Michael says, “Owning your own home means you have a lot more control over things and there’s a lot more you can do.”
