The National People First Project

The new project was called the National People First Project. It lasted for six years and when it ended People First of Canada was born. The project did a lot to help organize groups across Canada. Here are some of the things that the project did:

  • BOOKS: “Advice for Advisors” and the “Leadership Training Manual,” were written, in both English and French;
  • VIDEOS about People First: “We Can Do It” and “Speaking for Ourselves”;
  • CONFERENCES: local, provincial, national, and international;
  • LEADERSHIP TRAINING all over the country;
  • NEWSLETTER: “The National Organizer”;
  • COMMUNICATION: it kept People First groups in touch with one another and with the People First movement, and;
  • ADVOCACY: the people in the project worked as advocates for people who had been labelled.

With the help of the National People First Project, the founding convention of People First of Canada was held on: April 6th and 7th, 1991 in Saint John, New Brunswick.
