The Growth of People First of Canada

After the first meeting of self-advocates from across Canada, People First groups began to form in provinces and cities all across the country. It seemed that many people who had been labelled wanted to have their own groups so they could get together and talk about the things that were important to them.

In 1983, David Lincoln, who had been at the early meetings, was the President of People First of Ontario. He had dreams of starting a national organization, People First of Canada. David worked with Jacques Pelletier of the Canadian Association for Community Living to get funding to start the new organization. They began to talk to the government department that helped to fund those kinds of groups.

However, David had not talked to other People First leaders about the idea. He was getting funding for a national organization that none of the other provinces knew about yet. People were not sure if it was a good idea. People First leaders from across Canada got together to talk about a national organization. They came up with the “Self Advocacy Development Project”. They wanted to hire staff to help run the project. One staff member would be an advisor and one would be a self-advocate. There was also an advisory committee made up of People First leaders. The job of the project was to help organize self-advocacy groups across Canada. They got money from the government to run the project and pay for the staff.
